Trixie Dog House:  An important issue!

Apparently all of you have been waiting for me.  I receive mails that contain questions in various subjects and request solutions.  Believe me, I answer your e-mails one by one.  You can ask me any questions by clicking on the ‘’be my friend’’ button on my page.  You can even write to me just to say ‘’’Hello’’.

We continuously talk about our friends out on the streets and about the ones at home.  The ones in garden rebuked the other day, saying ‘’when is it our turn?’’.  So today I will have several suggestions for them.

Vegetarian Iguanas

Actually, my heart is completely against it.  I don’t support the fact that exotic animals are treated as pets but since they are kept as pets, I say please do it correctly so I am writing this.  Especially with the existing fact that iguanas die mostly of hunger inTurkey!  Yes, yes, you didn’t read it wrong, they are dying of hunger.  These poor animals are strict vegetarians but some people still continuing to feed them with insects and animal proteins are destroying them.  When they are in nature, they only eat the insects when they are really hungry or by mistake.

But they are constantly being forced to do so in the hands of their insensible owners.   I kindly ask you to correctly feed my little friends that you have taken from their natural living space, meaning from the north ofMexicowhere the temperatures and humidity are high, from the rain forests in the south ofBraziland imprison them in little cages in your homes.  You are obligated to do this since you have taken on their responsibilities…   This is why I recommend you the Trixie iguana food.  With this food which contains all their protein needs along with vitamins A, D and E and calcium and phosphor, you can feed your little friends the correct way.

Kırık Cam Teorisi

Biz hayvanların insanlardan çektiğini hiçbir insan birbirinden çekmemiştir eminim. Sizlerin en azından yasalarınız var, ağır cezalarınız var. Bizlerinse elinde Kabahatlar Kanunu kapsamında değerlendirilen bir yasası var. Hiçbir caydırıcılığı olmayan cezalar…Bekliyoruz, 5199 TCK’ya alınsın istiyoruz.

Bu arada bu işi neden ciddiye almamız gerektiğini güzel bir örnekle anlatmak istiyorum. Özgün Öztürk’ün Herşey bitti, sıra itlere geldi kitabında okudum. Olduğu gibi aktarıyorum, yorumsuz olarak…

1994 yılında Rudolf Giuliani belediye başkanlığına seçildiğinde, New York kentinde suç oranı zirveye ulaşmıştı. Sadece turistler, yabancılar değil, New York halkı da can güvenliğinden şikâyetçiydi.

Giuliani sekiz yıllık belediye başkanlığı sırasında kentteki adi suç oranını çok büyük oranda azalttı. Giuliani “Suçlarla mücadeleyi nasıl başardın?” sorusuna son derece basit açıklamalar yapıyordu:

“Önce küçük konulardan başladım. Terk edilmiş bile olsa, bir binada bir cam kırıldığında hemen tamir ettirdim. Bir binanın köşesine biri, bir torba çöp bıraksın  bir süre sonar  her geçen çöpünü oraya bırakır ve çok kısa bir sürede dağlar gibi çöp birikir.  Ben ilk bırakılan çöp torbasını kaldırttım.” cevabını verdi.

Bir sokağın suç bölgesine dönüşme süreci önce tek bir pencere camının kırılmasıyla başlıyor. Çevreden tepki gelmez ve cam hemen tamir edilmezse, oradan geçenler o bölgede düzeni sağlayan bir otorite olmadığını düşünüyor, diğer camları da kırıyor. Ardından daha büyük suçlar geliyor; bir süre sonra o sokak, polisin giremediği bir mahalleye dönüşüyor.

‘Kırık Cam Teorisi’ ABD’li suç psikologu Philip Zimbardo’nun 1969’da yaptığı bir deneyden ilham alarak geliştirilmişti. Zimbardo, suç oranının yüksek olduğu, yoksul Bronx ve daha yüksek yaşam standardına sahip Palo Alto bölgelerine birer “1959 model Oldsmobile” bıraktı.

Araçların plakası yoktu, kaputları aralıktı. Olup bitenleri gizli kamerayla izledi. Bronx’taki otomobil üç gün içinde baştan aşağıya yağmalandı. Diğerine ise bir hafta boyunca kimse dokunmadı. Ardından Zimbardo ile iki öğrencisi ’sağ kalan’ otomobilin yanına gidip çekiçle kelebek camını kırdı. Daha ilk darbe indirilmişti ki çevredeki insanlar (zengin beyazlar) da olaya dâhil oldu. Birkaç dakika sonra o otomobil de kullanılmaz hale gelmişti.

“Demek ki” diyordu Zimbardo, “ilk camın kırılmasına ya da çevreyi kirleten ilk çöp torbasına izin vermemek gerek. Aksi halde kötü gidişatı engelleyemeyiz.

The Broken Glass Theory

I am sure; no human has suffered damage from each other as much as us animals suffered from humans.  You people as least have laws, heavy punishments.  But we only have a law that is assessed within the scope of Fault Law.  Penalties that do not have any deterrents…  We are waiting, we want 5199 to be included in the Turkish Penal Code.

In the meantime, I want to explain to you, with a good example, why we need to take this seriously.  I have read it in Ozgun Ozturk’s ‘hersey bitti, sira itlere geldi’  (everything is finished, now it’s the dogs turn) book.   I am quoting it exactly, without any comments…

When Rudolf Giuliani was elected for mayor in 1994, the crime rate inNew York was at its peak.  Not only the tourists and foreigners, but the people ofNew York were complaining about the safety of their lives as well.

During his eight-year run, mayor Giuliani reduced the rate of petty crimes in the city by a very high rate.  When asked, ‘’How did you succeed against crime?’’, he was giving very simple explanations:

He answered, “I started with small issues first.  When a window was broken in a building, I had it repaired immediately even if it was abandoned.  If someone leaves garbage at the corner of a building, a while later he/she will start to leave garbage there every day and in a very short time, there will be mountains of garbage.  I had that first garbage bag picked up’’.

The process of a street turning into a crime region starts with breaking of a single window.  If there is no reaction from the neighborhood and the window does not get repaired, people think there is no authority there to organize order and break the other windows.  Afterwards, even greater crimes start and later on it turns into a neighborhood where police cannot enter.

The ‘Broken Glass Theory’ was carried out, inspired by an experiment that an American criminal psychologist Philip Zimbardo had conducted in 1969.  Zimbardo left one ‘’1959 model Oldsmobile’’ car in Bronx where the crime rate was high and people were poor and in thePalo Altoregion where the standard of living was much higher.

The vehicles had no license plates and their hoods were partly open.  He watched everything by a hidden camera.  The vehicle inBronxwas looted from top to bottom in three days.  No one touched the other vehicle for a week.  Then Zimbardo and his two students went by the ‘surviving’ vehicle and broke its quarter/swivel window with a hammer.  Just as the first strike was down, the surrounding people (rich whites) were included in the incident.  Within few minutes, the vehicle had become unusable.

“So” said Zimbardo, ‘’we should not allow for the first glass/window to be broken or for the first garbage bag that pollutes the environment.  Otherwise, we cannot stop the bad course of events.’’

Amaç kopek ve sahibinin uzun yıllar uyumlu bir birliktelik içinde yasamasıdır.  Bu hedef doğrultusunda köpeğin yasayacağı ortam, mekânda birlikte olacağı kişiler varsa çocuklar ve yasam alanın tüm detaylarının bir profesyonel tarafından gözlemlenerek değerlendirilmesi uzun vadede katkı sağlayacaktır.

Bazı durumlarda sahiplenmiş olduğunuz köpeğiniz uyum konusunda beklentilerinizi düşündüğünüz şekilde karşılayamayabilir.

Örneğin; apartman dairesinde yaşıyorsunuz, köpeğinizin sürekli havlama sorunu var. Bu durumdan dolayı sıkıntı yaşayabilirsiniz; tuvalet sorunu söz konusu olabilir; çocuğunuz var ise evinize yeni gelen kopeğinizle diyalogda sıkıntı yasayabilir.

Yukarıda kısaca belirtmiş olduğumuz sıkıntılardan dolayı barınaktan sahiplenilmiş köpeklerin tekrar barınağa geri gönderilmesi durumunda köpekte daha büyük psikolojik sorunlar oluşabilir.  Barınaktan sahiplenmiş olduğunuz kopeğin her hâlükârda bazı psikolojik sorunları var olabilir. Yanlış sahiplenme ve barınağa geri döndürülme durumunda ise kopekte tekrar terk edilme duygusu tetiklenebilir. Bu da daha büyük bir travmayla sonuçlanma olasılığını yükseltir.

Burada belirtilen olumsuzlukları her iki tarafın da yaşamaması için sahiplenme öncesi profesyonel destek alınması hususuna özen gösterilmesi gerekir.

NECESSARY INFORMATION THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN ADOPTING A DOG FROM A SHELTER

I am writing one of my articles today to actually support my orphan friends and to make their and you, our owners’ lives easier.

My dear educator friend, Kadriye UCAR, had mentioned.  Please read the article carefully and share it. Just because I am the ‘Guru’ does not mean I will not be getting any professional support.  ‘One who knows a lot, mistaken a lot”.  I have to learn from my friend too.

For the dogs that will be adopted from the shelters, it is important to obtain support from a professional instructor and make a selection that way.

The goal is to have the cats and the dogs living in harmony with their owners.  Within the frame of this target, to have a professional observe all the details and evaluate the environment, living area, people and children, if any, that the dog will be living with will be beneficial in the long term.

In some cases, the dog that you adopted may not meet your expectations, in terms of compatibility, as you have thought.

For example:  you live in an apartment and your dog has a constant barking problem.  You may suffer due to this situation.  Toilet training can be problem and if you have children, they may dialogue problems with your new dog in the house.

Due to the problems briefly explained above, in the cases that returning the dog you have adopted from the shelter back to shelter may create much larger psychological problems for the dog.  In any case, the dog that you have adopted from the shelter may already have some psychological problems.   And in the event of a wrongful adoption and returning back to the shelter may trigger a sense of abandonment in the dog again.  And this increases the possibility of much larger trauma results.

In order for both sides not to experience the above mentioned disadvantages, owners need pay attention to the subject of getting professional support before adopting.

Biri tuvalet eğitimi mi dedi?

Petlerin gurusuyum dedim, mailler yağmaya başladı. Sizlerden geldiği kadar sahiplerinizden de mail geliyor desem? Hatta sanki onlardan az daha fazla geliyor gibi. En büyük dertlerinden biri de yavru köpek tuvalet eğitimi! Barınaklardaki ve sokaklardaki terk edilmiş olan siz patili dostlarımdan da gelen en büyük sokağa atılma sebeplerinden de biri, hatta birincisi! Çoğunuz bu sebeple sokağa atıldığınızdan yakınıyorsunuz.

“Yazlıklarına götürdüler, her dakika istediğim yere tuvaletimi yapmama izin verdiler. Sonra kışlık eve gelince de neden her yere tuvaletini yapıyorsun diyerek bana kızdılar. Halbuki ben onlar ne istiyorsa onu yapıyordum” diyen Havuç’un mektubu yüreğimi dağladı mesela. Ne kadar da doğru söylemiş, sahiplerimiz bizden ne isterse onu yapıyoruz aslında. Ya da bize ne sınır çizerlerse ona uyuyoruz.

Ne eksik ne fazla! Ama sonunda düşüncesizliklerinin sorumlusu yine bizler oluyoruz. Ne adalet ama!

Bu sebeple, yani hem sahipleri eğitmek hem sizlerin evden atılmamasına katkıda bulunmak amacıyla birkaç önerim olacak.

Birincisi Trixie yavru köpek çiş eğitim pedi! Biliyorsunuz yavru köpekler uykudan uyanınca ve yemek yiyince tuvaletlerini yaparlar. Bu sebeple bu pedleri yataklarının yakınına yerleştirmelisiniz. Uyanınca, yemek yiyince veya su içince hemen bu pedin üzerine koymalısınız. Tuvaletini yapana kadar orada tutmalısınız. Pedi gün geçtikçe kapıya daha yakın bir yere koyun, sonunda da kapının önüne. Ama biraz zaman tanıyın. Siz de biraz sabır edin.

Yavru köpeğinizin en başlarda yaşadığı alanı mümkün mertebe sınırlı tutup bu pedleri kullanırsanız tuvalet eğitimini çok daha hızlı alacaktır. Geniş alanlar kafasının karışmasına, pedi unutmasına ve eğitimin gecikmesine neden olacaktır.

Önemli bir hatırlatma daha, diyelim ki salonda bir sınır çizdiniz ona, bir engel koydunuz. O zaman sakın ama sakın o engelin üzerinden eğilip onu sevmeyin. Bu sürekli çıkmak istemesine, o engeli aşmaya çalışmasına sebep olacaktır. Bu sefer yine işler zorlaşacaktır.

Did someone say toilet training?

I said I was the pet guru and tons of mail started pouring in.  What if I said, I receive mail from your owners as much as I receive from you?  In fact, it seems like there is more mail from them.  Their biggest complaint is toilet training a puppy!   It is one of the biggest reasons, in fact the first, that you, my pawed friends, are abandoned in the streets and in the shelters!    Most of you complain that this was the reason you were abandoned out in the streets.

For example, Havuc’s letter broke my heart. It said, “They took me to their summer home, let me do my bathroom every minute at wherever I wanted.  Then when we arrived at the winter home, they yelled at me for doing it everywhere. But I just doing what they wanted met o do’’.  It was so true.  We are actually doing what our owners want from us. Or we abide by whatever limits we are given.

Nothing more, nothing less!  But in the end, we are responsible for their thoughtlessness nonetheless.  Yeah, some justice!

For this reason, I am going to have some suggestions for the purposes of both training the owners and contributing so you are not thrown out of the house.

First one is the Trixie puppy pee training pad!   As you know, puppies go to the bathroom when they wake up and after they eat.  For this reason, you need to place these pads next to their beds.  You need to put them on the pad as soon as they wake up and after they eat or drink and must keep them there until they do their bathroom.  Move the pad closer to the door each day and at the end, front of the door.  But please give them some time and have a little patience.

If you initially limit the living space of your puppy as much as possible and use these pads, the puppy will toilet train much faster.  Large areas will cause confusion and lead him/her to forget the pad and prolong his training.

One more important reminder:  Let’s say you have drawn a border for him in the living room and put an obstacle.  Then never ever lean over that obstacle and love him.  This will lead to his request to constantly come out and try to overcome that obstacle.  And the things will be difficult again.

It is impossible for me to understand why many of my friends are abandoned in the streets just because they weren’t trained when toilet training is this simple.  Please think about all the challenges ahead of time before you take on the responsibility of another life.  Do not play around with our lives.

Cat Friends

As you know, the weather is cold.  I have said it in my previous article and I am saying it again:

Please do not forget to leave some water and left over meals in your front door for my friends out on the streets!

Please listen to my suggestions.  In my previous article, I had introduced the Smaily food for my dog friends.  I heard that my cat friends took offense.  They even thought I declared them as the ‘enemy’.  But my name is Gurulla, meaning the pet guru, in other words surpassed character.  Do you think this guru can be a racist?  Especially me?  I am deplored my cat friends.

For the quiet residents of the streets

I know your expectation of the first writing is different after meeting, especially for those who have pets at home.  You probably think I am going to provide information specific to you but as you know I am the pet guru, I am GURULLA.  Therefore, my priority during these cold winter days is my friends out on the street, those who are abandoned rather than the ones with tender love and care in their warm homes.   They are so helpless that we need to take care of them first.

Let’s not forget to leave a plate of water for them outside and please drip some oil in it to prevent it from freezing in this cold weather.  If we want to do more than this, we can buy some food.  Yes, dry food and if it is at all possible, real food.

I am sure you are saying, “You should be grateful for what you already have!”

And I am saying, “Yes, I am grateful, very grateful I found the truth!”
